Chlorine and filters: a simple routine
Updated October 2026
Most cloudy water and green tinges come down to two things: the chlorine level and the filters. Keep both on a routine and the water stays clear with very little effort.
Fitting it to how you use the tub
- Used most days
- Dose straight after each session, so the level has recovered by the next one. Shock weekly.
- Used now and then
- Chlorine still breaks down when the tub isn’t used. Test and top up at least twice a week, and test before you get in.
- Away for a while
- Ask someone to check it, or arrange a clean when you get back. Don’t overdose before you leave.
Levels, the right type of chlorine and pH are covered in the hot tub chlorine guide.
Holiday lets and other business use need a written testing routine and records under HSG282. Let guests know the basics with the guest instructions.
Why the filters matter so much
The filters trap the oils, lotions and debris that use up chlorine. A clogged filter means more chlorine is needed, the flow drops, and the water clouds faster.
- Rinse with a garden hose once a week, working between the pleats.
- Soak in a filter cleaner every two to four weeks. Household detergents and vinegar aren’t a substitute.
- Keep a spare set, so one is always clean and ready to go in.
- Replace a filter when the pleats are torn or flattened, or the end caps are cracked.
Step-by-step instructions are in the filter cleaning guide.
Small habits, clearer water
- Shower before you get in. It cuts the chlorine demand a lot.
- Keep the cover on between uses, to keep out leaves and sunlight.
- Run the jets for a few minutes with the cover off after dosing.
Chlorine smell? A strong smell usually means too little free chlorine and a build-up of spent chlorine, not too much. Shock the water and check the filters.

If your tub is sunk into decking or the ground, or set against a wall, it helps to mention it when you book. If you’re not sure, a photo is fine.
