An older tub, a new control system
These photos are from a Scarborough hot tub in Redruth. With the side panels off, we could get at the pipework and equipment bay. The second photo shows the same tub with a Balboa BP control system fitted.
When an older control system gives up, a replacement from another maker is sometimes an option. Not every tub is worth the cost, though. We’ll explain the choices and tell you the cost before we fit anything.
Old mining country
Redruth sits in the heart of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, with engine houses on the skyline around Lanner, Carharrack and St Day. Many homes here are terraced cottages, with newer estates around the edge of town.
Most repairs start with a cabinet panel off, so it helps to know how the tub is installed: freestanding, sunk into decking or the ground, or set against a wall or fence, and which sides we can get to.

When the water won’t heat
Two quick checks first. Rinse the filters, and make sure the water is above the skimmer opening. If it’s still cold, our guide, hot tub not heating, covers the usual causes.

- Filters rinsed? A clogged filter can slow the flow enough to stop the heater.
- Water above the skimmer? A low level can starve the pump of water.
- Lid on? Keep the cover on while the water heats.
