Hot Tub Repair Helpful Hints 2
1 AprilHot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints 2
In the first article of these hints on hot tub repair, we mentioned that DIY hot tub repair can be messy or even dangerous (if electrical work is involved) for amateurs. However, a general idea about problems and likely causes can help you brief the repair person properly so that the person can come prepared and complete the job quickly.
Hot Tub Works but Water does not get adequately Heated
The problem in this case could be with the power supply, heater, thermostat or one of several others.
- Is the power supply at the required voltage, i.e. 110 volts or 220 volts as appropriate for your hot tub?
- Is the water flowing when the pump is running? It could be that an air lock is preventing water flow, which in turn cuts off power supply to the heater. You can solve the air lock problem by closing the water intake valve to the pump and then loosening the plumbing in front just enough for the air to escape. Tighten the plumbing and open the intake valve before re-energizing the pump.
- If water flow is okay, the problem could be with the heater. Switch to thermostat mode and turn thermostat clockwise to max. Check power at heater terminals. If power is okay and water sill does not heat in reasonable time, the problem is most likely with the heater element.
- It could happen that the pump does not engage with the thermostat, or the power at the heater is not correct (and you don’t really know what to do), it is best you call in a hot tub repair person who can check the contactors and other issues. The problem could be with the thermostat or the controls, best left to professionals to handle.
You should be able to provide meaningful information to the repair person even if you couldn’t solve the problem.

Hot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints
26 MarchHot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints
While it is best to call in trained hot tub repair professionals to repair and service your hot tub in case of problems, some familiarity with the issues can help you brief the repair person adequately so that the person can come prepared and execute the work quickly. For the simpler issues, you might even be able to do the repair yourself.
DIY repair is not recommended where the issue is not a simple one. Electrical work could be particularly dangerous for amateurs in the presence of water. And unless the water flows are not switched off before removing any components forming part of the plumbing, the place could get more than a little messy,
Subject to the above observations, let us look at hot tub problems and simple repairs.
Hot Tub does not turn on
The typical reason is interruption in power supply to the hot tub, which could occur at several points. You would need a electrical multimeter to check availability of power and its voltage at these points. If you don’t know how to use a multimeter, it’s best you leave the electrical work to a trained person.
- Check incoming power and its voltage, which should be 110V or 220V depending on your equipment.
- If power is present and voltage is correct, check the trip switch. If it is not getting set properly (allowing current to flow) the problem could be with one of the connected components or the switch itself. Disconnect all the components and then reconnect them one by one. If the trip switch gets tripped on connecting a particular component (pump, heater, blower, etc) you might have found the problem.
- If the trip switch is okay, check the fuse. If the fuse is blown, a test like the one described for trip switch could indicate the problem. On the other hand, if the fuse gets blown even when all the components are disconnected, the problem could be with the wiring. In this case, leave the task of troubleshooting to a trained electrician.
- If the above procedures do not solve the problem, it could be related to the contactors or the control in the hot tub. Your best option is to call in your hot tub repair company and explain the problem and what you did.

Hot Tub Repairs and Servicing Issues
23 MarchHot Tub Repairs and Servicing Issues
Few things might seem as pleasurable as relaxing in a hot tub on a cold and boring day when you don’t feel like going out. However, if your hot tub is not in good condition, you might find the pleasure disappearing with all the problems of getting it to work as you want. While you can of course keep the tub in good working condition for long periods through a few simple maintenance practices, a time is likely to come when you need expert outside help to fix problems.
After all, your hot tub is a complex assembly of water and air pumps, heaters, plumbing, nozzles, filters and more. Things mechanical (or electrical, for that matter) have a habit of failing through constant wear (if not original defects). And unless you are a trained technician, you might not be able to identify the problem and do what is needed if, say the water pump ceases working.
Finding a hot tub repair man might not be as easy as you might think. Hot tubs come in many makes and models, and configurations. It could happen that you could not find a competent service person for the hot tub you brought with you when you moved. Service persons might be familiar only with the makes and models generally in use in the locality.
It is a good idea therefore to locate a hot tub service company that can repair and service all the different makes and models of hot tubs.
If you live in an out-of-way place, you might have difficulty getting the repair technician in time to your home to repair the problematic hot tub. Though hot tubs are considered “portable,” they can weigh 1000 pounds and carrying them to the service company might not be all that practical.
Find out how you can get repair persons to your house when needed. Sticking to one repair company instead of hunting for bargains for every hot tub need might be a good idea. Cultivate a relationship that can come in handy during emergencies.
Hot Tub Problems – Excessive Foam
16 FebruaryHot Tub Problems: Excessive Foam
While bubbly spa water is normal excessive foaming is not. If excessive foaming is allowed to continue the spa water becomes bad. Bad spa water will require more frequent adjustments and the filters are also likely to get more easily damaged. In addition to higher costs as above, the experience provided by the hot tub also becomes less than pleasing.
Several factors can lead to excessive foaming in hot tubs. Residues of foaming products such as shampoo and deodorants used by bathers can cause it. Bathers should consider showering before using the spa or at least not using hair and skin care products before entering the hot tub.
The detergent residues in your bathing suits also can lead to excessive foaming. However well the suits are rinsed, some residues will remain if detergents are used during washing. The solution is to wash these suits without using detergents. Wash them more often to compensate.
If you drink liquids while in the spa, it is possible that some of these are spilt into the spa water. Some of the liquids have a foaming effect. Take particular care not to spill what you drink.
Yet another cause can be the very chemicals that you use to keep the water healthy. While quality chemicals used strictly as per directions might not cause such foaming, fillers in cheap chemicals, as also excessive use of even good quality chemicals, can. So use only good quality chemicals and use them as per directions on the package.
Accumulated solids dissolved in the hot tub water also contribute to excessive foaming. These solids come from different sources – such as the chemicals you use to maintain water quality, the cosmetic products you use and even the skin flakes peeling from your body. The solution to this problem is to replace the water in the hot tub once in three months.

Hot Tub Repair: Common Issues
31 JanuaryHot Tub Repair: Common Issues
It is inevitable that at one point in time an owner will start to have problems with their hot tub. Hot tub repair can vary in difficulty. Some issues only require minor fixes, while others can be much more serious and will require the services of a repair professional.
Over time the hot tub’s filter is likely to become clogged and dirty. The dirty filter can cause the water quality to become quite poor. This can often be replaced or cleaned by the owner, but if he/she is unsure of what they are doing calling a professional is definitely a good idea.
Some more serious problems that can occur are often a result of an issue with the unit’s motor, pump, or heater. Trying to repair these problems yourself can be extremely dangerous. Also you have the potential to damage your hot tub. That is why calling a hot tub repair specialist is very important if the owner believes they are having problems with any of these parts.
The PH level and sanitizer level can often deviate from the recommended levels. Preventative maintenance is the best way to avoid having this issue. However, if after cleaning and maintaining your hot tub you are still having this problem, call a service technician as these imbalances can lead to more serious problems in the future.
Problems with the wiring of the hot tub can also cause major problems. Wiring issues usually result in a blown breaker which prevents the unit’s various components from working. It is extremely important to let a certified professional handle these issues as working on the wiring can be very dangerous.
Luckily for the owner hot tub repair does not take a significant amount of time. Certified professionals can usually fix any problem within a couple of hours. So before you know it you will be able to relax and soak in your hot tub again.

Hot Tubs During Pregnancy
10 January
Don’t use your hot tub when pregnant, here’s why!
Many people ask me if its ok to use a hot tub whilst being pregnant, the following article explains 1 of the reason not to get in.
For many pregnant women, sitting in a hot tub sounds like a great way to ease muscle aches related to pregnancy. It is important to use caution when choosing a hot tub for relaxation and pain relief. Hot tubs can cause hyperthermia, which is an abnormally high body temperature.
What is the concern with hot tubs during pregnancy?
According to the Organization of Teratology Information Services (OTIS), a body temperature of 101º F and above can raise concerns during pregnancy. Some studies have shown an increased risk of birth defects in babies of women who had an increased body temperature during the first trimester of pregnancy.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states that becoming overheated in a hot tub is not recommended during pregnancy. ACOG also recommends that pregnant women never let their core body temperature rise above 102.2º F.
Although the specific degree differs, both OTIS and ACOG attest to the concern related to hot tub use during pregnancy.
Hot tubs are often factory programmed to maintain a water temperature of approximately 104º F. It takes only 10-20 minutes in a hot tub to raise your body temperature to 102º F or higher. To maintain a steady temperature, water is circulated and re-circulated through the hot tub to pump out cold water and pump in hot water.

Spa Repair
2 JanuarySpa Repair – Hot Tub troubleshooting steps you can do yourself
Written by …. www.precisionspa.com
LA’s Premiere Hot Tub Repair &Service Company – Since 1995
As a home owner there are quite a few Hot Tub troubleshooting steps you can do yourself before you call a spa repair company. There are many different reasons why you would want to trouble shoot your spa.
This is what you can do yourself;
Notice where the leak is visible around the spa
• On which side of the spa is the water visible
• Notice the slope of the concrete slab the spa is sitting on. If the concrete slab is sloped the water will frequently appear not on the side where the actual leak is but on the opposite site of the spa
• Open the equipment area and look for apparent leaks
• Open the sides of the spa and look for apparent leaks. Use a dry wooden stick to poke through the Insulation. If the stick is wet when you pull it out, that is a sign that you have water in the foam and that the leak might be there. Be sure to start poking toward the bottom
If you can locate the leak as described above your will have saved yourself a few hundred dollars in leak detection cost.
Spa and Hot Tub Pump Trouble Shooting
Pump problems are much easier to diagnose for a technician, hence most of the actual pump diagnostic service calls are free. It may only take a skilled technician a couple of minutes to accurately determine what the problems are.
As a home owner, it is a little bit more complicated for you to trouble shoot a pump. You do need access to an electrical tester and you need to be familiar with some electronic controls and a basic knowledge of how a pump works.
If you have a pump that is not working. Please write down all the information from the name plate on the pump as well as on the spa itself. You can then contact your spa repair company and see if they can give you a price for repairing/replacing the pump without coming out to your house for a service call.
Spa and Hot Tub Heater Diagnosis
To diagnose a heater not working past the “my hot tub water isn’t getting warm” is a little bit more complicated. You will need to look for the following;
1. Are your filters cleaned? Clean them and try again. Or, remove them and try again
2. Can you hear the pump humming but no water coming out? You may have a air lock problem
3. Do you have power going to the spa?
You may have to open up the control panel (only to that if you are comfortable with trouble shooting on live electrical circuits). You also will need to have a voltage tester and an amp probe. With those tools in your hand, call our office and we will take you through how to do it yourself.
These are some steps in Hot Tub troubleshooting steps you can do yourself.
