The days when all the pumping that a hot tub needed was done by a single water pump are gone. Modern hot tubs or rather spas typically have two or three, while some might boast of five pumps. What do all these pumps do?
The basic function of the water tub is to keep heated water in the tub. The water pump, when it is operating, keeps the water circulating over a heater so that it is sufficiently warm. Water can get cold when it is being used.
The pump also pushes the water through the filtration system so that debris and harmful stuff in the water is removed. Without the force provided by the pumping, water might not get filtered adequately.
Other functions performed by the pumps in a hot tub include:
- Providing the therapeutic massage of desired force. It is the pumps that expel the water through the jets in the hot tub with sufficient strength to deliver the massaging experience.
- Mixing air and water to provide misted water to provide an enhanced massaging experience. An air blower is a dedicated pump that pumps air through the air pipes, while modern spas might have the functionality to mix air and water in the jets without an air blower.
- Circulating ozone throughout the water where you have an ozone generator installed. Ozone is highly effective in removing harmful organisms from the water and maintaining it in crystal clear condition. Ozone also reduces the costs of standard chlorine / bromine sanitation.
Pumps are mechanical devices with moving parts and are among the first devices in the hot tub to cause problems. The problems usually occur because of:
- Wear and tear of constantly moving parts resulting in some part failing and affecting the efficiency of the pumping function if not stopping it fully.
- The acidity and other properties of the water affecting the ceramic seal separating the dry (motor) and wet (water) ends of the pump, creating cracks that causes water leaks. If the leak is not detected and the seal replaced early enough, water can leak into the motor and repairing the motor can cost far more than the cost of replacing the seal.
You can minimize hot tub servicing costs by keeping the water at the recommended pH levels through regular testing and treatment. Additionally, check the tub for any signs of leak; the earlier you detect a leaking pump, the less will be your hot tub servicing costs.

Hot Tub Cleaning
16 AprilHot Tub Cleaning
Your hot tub needs to be cleaned to maintain the healthy and pleasing experience it provides to you. The cleaning is in addition to the water treatment routines using chlorine and pH regulating chemicals. While these hot tub chemicals deal with the water chemistry, the cleaning deals with the surface of the water and the tub itself.
Using a skimmer to remove the floating debris is the most obvious of cleaning routines. A lot of debris from different sources tends to accumulate in the water, particularly if it is located outdoors. If your hot tub has a skimmer basket, it needs to be emptied once or more every week.
Special chemicals that are compatible with the hot tub water chemistry are often used to clean the waterline and minimise deposits of oil and debris. Household cleaners might not be compatible with hot tub water chemistry. The filters that remove much of the debris on a routine basis should be hosed and cleaned once a month.
Hot tub skirting and the cover will also need to be wiped clean if dirt has accumulated. Use a sponge to do this.
The water in the hot tub needs to be drained once a quarter and the hot tub completely cleaned before re-filling it with fresh water. While the hot tub chemicals can maintain the water in good condition for several weeks, as the level of dissolved solids in the water increases over a period of time, their efficacy tends to decrease. A complete replenishment of water, of desired properties, can help reduce chemical use in addition to giving you a fresh start.
Test the water used for refilling to ensure that it has the desired properties. Even clean water might have unacceptable pH levels, and might contain calcium and heavy metals that can affect the water quality and potentially damage your tub components.
While the issue of cleaning your hot tub might seem complicated and a big trouble, it will cease to be so once you have become familiar with the routines. Also, the pleasing experience and health benefits that a well-maintained hot tub provides will make the trouble pale in comparison.

Hot Tubs and Aromatherapy
19 OctoberHot Tubs and Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy involves using the power of smell to enhance health and well-being, and heal illnesses. Few would disagree that smells are powerful; they can greatly influence our mood. Most of us would have had the experience of feeling exhilarated when a strange and enchanting smell wafts into our noses while walking around in a garden.
Aroma therapists say that smells do much more. Scents can alleviate pain, tone up the skin, reduce anxiety, relieve tensions and invigorate the whole body. They provide a great experience curing fatigue at the end of a tiring day.
Aromas work on the brain through the olfactory neurons in the nasal cavity. The neurons carry the sensation to the limbic area of the brain. The limbic system is connected to memories and emotions and it is no wonder that smells can rouse long-forgotten experiences and affect one’s emotions.
Scents in the Hot Tub
Hot tubs are meant for relaxation. When aromas supplement the warm water, the effect can be dramatic. Just imagine soaking in the warmth of the water that also fills your nose with the smell of jasmine or rose at the end of another day!
The aromas are created by essential oils, oils that extract the essence of flowers, plants, herbs, fruits, barks, grasses and trees. These oils are added to the water in the hot tub and your experience suddenly acquires a new dimension. Hot tub aroma products often come in the form of crystals rather than oils, because oils can spoil the water quality.
The sense of well-being that you feel as a result can improve your health over a period of time, because mind and body are closely linked.
Therapists say that there are 150 kinds of essential oils, providing different benefits, including antiseptic, antiviral and pain-relieving effects among others. Hot tub users are more likely to be interested in the stress-relieving, relaxing and invigorating properties of the oils. There are reportedly oils that are antidepressants or diuretic, or that can improve your digestion.
Adding smells to your hot tub water can thus result in much more than creating a pleasing experience. They can have just the kind therapeutic benefits that you are looking for.

These days, hot tubs are not just a wooden containers filled with hot water. Instead they are complex collection of components that provide much more than just a warm soak. They come with jets that massage different parts of the body, pumps that keep the water moving around, filters that clean the circulating water and electronic controllers that keep everything at the correct temperature and in control.
The air blowers that provide you with a bubble bath experience are another component that adds to the complexity. The plumbing of the modern hot tub is also more complex as it has to serve the water jets and air blowers in addition to draining and filling the tub.
The modern lifestyle-enhancing hot tub (or spa) also comes with lighting effects and music to keep you entertained during your soak.
Servicing the today’s hot tub requires different kinds of expertise. You need plumbing, electrical and electronic expertise. You also need detailed familiarity with the components in the hot tubs themselves and their special problems.
The task is complicated by the fact that there hot tubs in use that are made by many manufacturers with each of them supplying different models yearly. Only years of experience in the field can equip a service provider with the needed familiarity to service all the varied makes and models.
You might decide to call service providers not only when your hot tub has some problem that needs being attended to. Hot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints
26 MarchHot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints
While it is best to call in trained hot tub repair professionals to repair and service your hot tub in case of problems, some familiarity with the issues can help you brief the repair person adequately so that the person can come prepared and execute the work quickly. For the simpler issues, you might even be able to do the repair yourself.
DIY repair is not recommended where the issue is not a simple one. Electrical work could be particularly dangerous for amateurs in the presence of water. And unless the water flows are not switched off before removing any components forming part of the plumbing, the place could get more than a little messy,
Subject to the above observations, let us look at hot tub problems and simple repairs.
Hot Tub does not turn on
The typical reason is interruption in power supply to the hot tub, which could occur at several points. You would need a electrical multimeter to check availability of power and its voltage at these points. If you don’t know how to use a multimeter, it’s best you leave the electrical work to a trained person.
- Check incoming power and its voltage, which should be 110V or 220V depending on your equipment.
- If power is present and voltage is correct, check the trip switch. If it is not getting set properly (allowing current to flow) the problem could be with one of the connected components or the switch itself. Disconnect all the components and then reconnect them one by one. If the trip switch gets tripped on connecting a particular component (pump, heater, blower, etc) you might have found the problem.
- If the trip switch is okay, check the fuse. If the fuse is blown, a test like the one described for trip switch could indicate the problem. On the other hand, if the fuse gets blown even when all the components are disconnected, the problem could be with the wiring. In this case, leave the task of troubleshooting to a trained electrician.
- If the above procedures do not solve the problem, it could be related to the contactors or the control in the hot tub. Your best option is to call in your hot tub repair company and explain the problem and what you did.

Hot Tub Plumbing
12 March
Hot tubs work by drawing, heating and circulating water. Naturally, this requires a well designed plumbing system to work efficiently and effectively. Water is drawn from a source, pumped through a water heater and the hot water is then carried to the hot tub through a network of tubes and jets.
Water from any source (particularly from the spa itself) is likely to contain a lot of debris and other undesirable stuff. You need to use filters to remove these before the water is returned to the spa. Filters can be suction type, i.e. connected before the pump’s water intake or pressure type, i.e. pressurized by the pump.
Suction filters can be the weir type that float to the water surface and skim the impurities or skimmer basket type. Pressure filters require a separate skimmer unit.
The water pump forces the water through a heater that heats the water to the set temperature. The heated water flows through larger tubes that end in a network of smaller tubes connected to the jets. Air induction jets mix heated water and air in desired proportions before letting the water into the spa.
The higher qualify air induction jets can eliminate the need for a separate air blower that consumes additional power. Air circulation also requires plumbing of its own, ending in the same air-induction jets that pump the water into the tub
Where an ozonator is used, the ozone jet is place low to maximize water contact. The tube that caries the ozone from the generator to the jet typically loops over the water line so that water cannot back up into the ozonator.
Air blowers also use such a loop and also incorporate a check valve that prevents water from getting into the air lines. Water in air lines can cause water leakage from the hot tub and also electrical short circuit.
Water loses its force around 90 degree bends and so it is a good idea to minimize such bends. Another good idea is to use 2 inch plumbing that can handle almost twice the quantity of water compared to 1.5 inch. The larger pipes also reduces back pressure at the pump.

The Different Types Of Hot Tub Services
5 MarchThe Different Types Of Hot Tub Services
Many different measures and actions are taken during spa and hot tub services. Regular maintenance will ensure a long life time of usage. Trained professionals, with the right knowledge and equipment can offer most or all of these services. Diligence will keep most problems at bay.
Most hot tub and spa manufacturers suggest a complete draining and refilling three to four times a year. Not doing so can lead to unsanitary water conditions that can result in skin problems. Equipment deterioration can also take place without regular water changing. This lack of care may result in a voiding of the warranty. In most cases draining and refilling takes about an hour for each action and the water is then treated chemically to the right balances.
Water lines must be flushed and cleaned periodically. If not done bacteria can build up in the lines. This causes odors and unsanitary conditions.
Acrylic shells must also be cared for. This is a two step process in which an acrylic friendly solvent is applied to a drained hot tub or spa to clean it. Then a special wax is applied and hand buffed onto the material.

Cleaning and replacing filters is also an important part to regular maintenance.Depending on the usage and run time of a spa or hot tub filters may need to be replaced twice a month. This prevents clogged lines that can result when filters are damaged and keep the water clean. Chemical balance is an important facet of well running, healthy hot tubs. Lines and filters play an important role in this.
Although covers and pillows are above the water line they catch much of the steam that is released. This steam contains bacteria that is captured in the materials. This bacteria can fester causing odor and unsightly stains to the items. Covers are a necessary component and can be expensive to replace. To elongate their service time they should be regularly maintained and cleaned. Covers should always be kept in place when the hot tub or spa is not in use to avoid filter and line blockage.
Prior to doing any of these things a full spa inspection will take place. This can take up to an hour as well. During the inspection all lines, hoses and filters are checked for abnormalities or problems. The inspection will also check your acrylics and pumps. After doing this a detailed inspection report can be given and the services needed will be suggested.
Opening and closing of spas during off seasons can also be accomplished for convenience. This is mostly used when a prolonged time of non usage is expected. This type of hot tub service in many cases will include the inspection. If problems are found during closing or opening the proper spa service can be performed then to avoid delay in usage.
The allure of sparkling, steamy water can ensured by these hot tub and spa services. Regular maintenance will also diminish health risks that can arise from contaminated or dirty water. This will ensure enjoyment for many years and save money on broken parts that need to be fixed or replaced.

Hot Tub Parts – Part 2 – My Hot Tub
13 FebruaryHot Tub Parts – Part 2 – My Hot Tub
In a previous article on hot tub parts, we mentioned that the modern hot tub is a complex assembly that needs periodic maintenance and replacements of parts. A familiarity with the names and functions of the parts could make this task easier for the non-technical hot tub users. In this article, we continue the discussion looking at other parts of the hot tub assembly.
Circuit Boards: Circuit boards connect the various electronic components in a convenient manner, replacing the earlier method of using wires to connect the components. On a printed circuit board, the connections are made using etched metal lines on the board. The electronic assembly of components controls various functions of the hot tub providing the controlled experience you get.
Replacing circuit boards need special care. These boards are often of a proprietary design and you will have to find the board that works with your hot tub. You will also have to ensure that the connectors that connect the tub and board are compatible.
Air Blowers: Air blowers also known as bubblers give a bubbly feel to the water. The blower assembly consists of a fan motor and plumbing to get the blown air into the water. The plumbing has to ensure that the water do not get into the air chambers. Some experts suggest that use of air blowers should be avoided as it increases energy consumption and adds to maintenance costs.
Air blowers also come in different models and you have to make sure the replacement you buy is suitable for your hot tub.
Ozonators: Ozone gas sanitizes your spa by destroying bacteria and viruses present in the spa water. Ozone also breaks down body oils so that the water remains clear and fresh for longer periods. Using an ozonator (or ozone generator) also helps you keep the levels of chlorine in the water lower.
Ozone is generated by exposing oxygen to UV light or a “corona” discharge. The ozonator will have either a UV light bulb or a corona discharge device. The generated ozone is passed through an airline to a water jet.
