Hot Tub Repair Helpful Hints 2

Hot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints 2

In the first article of these hints on hot tub repair, we mentioned that DIY hot tub repair can be messy or even dangerous (if electrical work is involved) for amateurs. However, a general idea about problems and likely causes can help you brief the repair person properly so that the person can come prepared and complete the job quickly.

Hot Tub Works but Water does not get adequately Heated

The problem in this case could be with the power supply, heater, thermostat or one of several others.

  • Is the power supply at the required voltage, i.e. 110 volts or 220 volts as appropriate for your hot tub?
  • Is the water flowing when the pump is running? It could be that an air lock is preventing water flow, which in turn cuts off power supply to the heater. You can solve the air lock problem by closing the water intake valve to the pump and then loosening the plumbing in front just enough for the air to escape. Tighten the plumbing and open the intake valve before re-energizing the pump.
  • If water flow is okay, the problem could be with the heater. Switch to thermostat mode and turn thermostat clockwise to max. Check power at heater terminals. If power is okay and water sill does not heat in reasonable time, the problem is most likely with the heater element.
  • It could happen that the pump does not engage with the thermostat, or the power at the heater is not correct (and you don’t really know what to do), it is best you call in a hot tub repair person who can check the contactors and other issues. The problem could be with the thermostat or the controls, best left to professionals to handle.

You should be able to provide meaningful information to the repair person even if you couldn’t solve the problem.

How To Repair A Hot Tub Pump

How To Repair A Hot Tub Pump

Many people enjoy using hot tubs year around, either in their homes or outdoors. When something goes wrong with the parts and functioning, it can be costly to fix. You can save a lot of money by repairing it yourself. By finding out what the specific issue is, it will be easier and quicker to resolve.

If something is wrong with the speed or speed controls, this is usually a sign that there is a problem. If it is stuck on either low or high speed, this is a symptom that there is an issue. Also, of both speeds go at the same time, you should try and resolves the problem so no further damage is done.

If your hot tub is stuck on low speed there are steps you should take to fix it. First, turn the thermostat all the clock wise and make sure to turn the timer off. Next, try switching it over to high speed. If this doesn’t happen you should make sure the high and low speed wires are both connected with the pump. If this fails, you should make sure all connections at the circuit board are okay and in working order.

If you are having the issue of both high and low speeds running at the same time, you can fix this by first disconnecting the pump cord and checking for power on the air switch. If both have power going to them, then there is an internal problem. This mean that the connecting wires have shorted in some way. You may end up having to replace the motor. If you are unable to switch from speed to speed, then the issue is the air switch.

If you are having the issue that it will not go on high speed, this is also either a pump or motor problem. If you try it and nothing happens, rotate the timer and then rotate the thermostat clockwise. After this, if it engages, you should switch the red and black wires. If it is impossible to make it go on high speed, you should replace the motor.

You can also consider checking the voltage. This is found in the back by the motor. If the voltage is fine, then the problem may lie in the pump cord itself. You can check for burnt areas, melted metals, and cord breakage. If you see any of these things, the cord should be replaced immediately. If something is wrong with the voltage at the air switch output, replace the pump output.

If the problem is constant low speed, there are steps to fix that as well. Firstly, turn the timer off and turn the thermostat clockwise. Next, try to switch to the high speed setting. If the high speed does turn on, all you have to do is re-work the wires by swapping out the black and red ones. If nothing changes, you need to replace the contactor.

These are suggestions on how to repair a hot tub pump. You should always be careful when working with electrical wires. If you cannot fix the problem yourself, there are professionals who can assist you.

Hot Tub Parts

Don't Trash it, Repair it!

Hot tubs that are defective can be a carrier of diseases. The warm water can be a breeding ground for bacteria unless it is sterilized. The hot tub is an assembly of many parts that work to keep your experience warm, convenient and healthy. If the parts cease to work as intended, these elements of your experience are affected.

A typical hot tub consists of parts like jets and jet pumps, heaters, air blowers, filters, skimmers and associated controls. The body typically involves woodwork and acrylic surfaces. All of these can suffer damage with consequent malfunctioning that affects your experience.

The task of repairing hot tubs is further complicated by their variety. They can come in the forms of traditional hot tubsspas or swim spas. Each of these can be of different makes and models, made in UK or other countries with different standards. Some might even be unbranded.

The units can also be portable, built-in, private or commercial.

Manufacturers warranty can be voided if you get your hot tub repaired by unauthorized repairs.

Hot Tub Owners can Benefit from a Familiarity with Hot Tub Parts

Service Hot TubThe modern hot tub is a rather complex assembly of many components that work together to provide a great experience to users. Components have a way of getting worn out or get damaged and might need replacement at regular intervals. Even if you are not a DIYer, you can benefit from a familiarity with spa parts; you will then at least be able to name the spare part over the phone.

The Spa Pack: The Spa Pack controls the water flow of your spa, which is not a simple task considering that you might want to control the temperature and timing of the water flow, for example. The Pack contains a printed circuit board that controls the timing and other characteristics of the flow, a water heater and might also include the pump.

Jet Pumps: The pump that moves the water is a key component of the spa. Pumps have a “wet end” that contains the water-moving impeller, a motor that turns the impeller and pump seals to separate the wet end and the dry end containing the motor. Poor quality or damaged seals lead to hot tub water leaks.

Water Heater: A special metal wire that heats up when electricity passes through it is the key element of the water heater. The wire is surrounded by ceramic powder enclosed in a strong metal sheath. This heater component is surrounded by a heater manifold that allows water to flow through and get heated, and might also include a high limit switch that breaks the circuit when the temperature reaches a pre-set limit.

Jets: It is the jets that provide the varied water experiences to the user. Names such as Roto Storm Jet, Whirly Storm Jet, Storm Pulsator Jet and Massage Jet provide an indication about the experiences you can expect.

What To Do If A Hot Tub Is Tripping The Electrics

by

Call a Qualified Hot Tub Electrician.

Hot Tub Electrician

Home owners often wonder what to do if a hot tub is tripping the elctrics. Unless someone has basic electrical knowledge, they should not attempt to work on it. It is risky to work with electricity and water simultaneously and unless a person knows what he is doing, it could lead to electrical shock. If a person does not have the knowledge and experience to do the job, it is best to call in a professional licensed electrician.

The average spa can be repaired in a particular way, however custom packs will vary. It is best to use a professional if one is unsure about anything relating to the troubleshooting of a spa. The same applies to installing new components for the spa.

Should the GFCI breaker trip when the spa is powered up, it is suggested that the load be disconnected from the breaker. If the breaker still trips, it should be replaced. If the breaker trips when all the load has been disconnected, it is an indication that the breaker is faulty.

Each individual component of the spa should be disconnected to see if the breaker can be switched on without tripping. Components with receptacle or plug connections, such as the ozonator, pump, blower or light should be unplugged one at a time. Using this as a process of elimination, a person can easily find out which part is faulty. The part can then be replaced or repaired.

Another way to find faulty components, is to run the spa with all the components for fifteen minutes. After the time is up, a person can check all the components to see if any of them are warm. The GFCI should also be checked. Any hot components should be replaced. The heater element should also be inspected and replaced if it has imperfections or if it corroded.

Nuisance trips may occur throughout the day, at any time. If this is the case, one should look for moisture in the GFCI box. Moisture could be caused by a leak and it can cause big problems. This could cause the trips and the problem that causes the moisture should be repaired as soon as possible.

Corrosion on contacts or overheated wire connections could also be the problem and should be corrected. All the connections should also be checked to insure that there are no poor crimp connections or loose spade connections. A person can tug at all the connections to look for these problems. It is also important to ensure that the mounting tags on the GFCI breaker are secure.

If the homeowner still does not know what to do if a hot tub is tripping the elctrics, it is advised that he or she calls in the professionals. Reputable electricians are usually available twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Spa installers are also trained in dealing with electrical issues that are related to spas. If the spa came with a warranty, the installers can be contacted to deal with the problem. It would be best to contact the installers first.

Hot Tub Repair: Common Issues

Hot Tub Repair: Common Issues

It is inevitable that at one point in time an owner will start to have problems with their hot tub. Hot tub repair can vary in difficulty. Some issues only require minor fixes, while others can be much more serious and will require the services of a repair professional.

Over time the hot tub’s filter is likely to become clogged and dirty. The dirty filter can cause the water quality to become quite poor. This can often be replaced or cleaned by the owner, but if he/she is unsure of what they are doing calling a professional is definitely a good idea.

Some more serious problems that can occur are often a result of an issue with the unit’s motor, pump, or heater. Trying to repair these problems yourself can be extremely dangerous. Also you have the potential to damage your hot tub. That is why calling a hot tub repair specialist is very important if the owner believes they are having problems with any of these parts.

The PH level and sanitizer level can often deviate from the recommended levels. Preventative maintenance is the best way to avoid having this issue. However, if after cleaning and maintaining your hot tub you are still having this problem, call a service technician as these imbalances can lead to more serious problems in the future.

Problems with the wiring of the hot tub can also cause major problems. Wiring issues usually result in a blown breaker which prevents the unit’s various components from working. It is extremely important to let a certified professional handle these issues as working on the wiring can be very dangerous.

Luckily for the owner hot tub repair does not take a significant amount of time. Certified professionals can usually fix any problem within a couple of hours. So before you know it you will be able to relax and soak in your hot tub again.

Hot Tub Heater

by

How to test a hot tub heater if it’s not working.

Their are many reasons why a hot tub may stop heating, the following points define the most common not heating reasons. Sometimes 2 or more of the following problems have to be resolved to resume heating in a hot tub.

Dirty filters

The most common fault of any hot tub is old or dirty hot tub filters, try replacing the filter for a new one and see if this resolves your problem, if the filter is more than 1 years old it will probably need changing anyway.

Pressure switchs

Most hot tub heaters (apart from Balboa M7 Heaters) have a pressure switch which proves water is flowing inside the hot tubs plumbing, when the circulation pump of the spa starts up the pressure from the pump will close a circuit which enables the power for the hot tub heater.

This can get blocked or may need replacing, the control panel will usually define this with an error code: FL1 FLO or 3 lines or dots (— or . . .) see Hot Tub Error Codes

Most pressure switches are easily tested by lopping out the switch or replacing with a new.

(note: never adjust a pressure switch, they are factory set and designed to fail, if the switch stays open and the circulation pump fails you will get an expensive repair bill)

Error Codes

If you have an error code on your spa and need assistance don’t be afraid to call, because you don’t always need a call out or repair. Hot Tub Error Codes

Faulty Circulation Pump

Faulty pumps are common, the reduced flow of a dirty filter can easily burn out a hot tub pump, If the pump is getting power and roatating it may just be an air lock (try lossening a pump union to resolve).

If the pump is buzzing the capacitor may need replacing, again check the filter and/or replace. A hot tub pump capacitor is usually a quick job. Other reasons for a buzzing pump are burnt out coil and rusty/ seized bearings. Hot Tub Pump parts

Heater Tripping Hot Tub

To test if the heater is tripping the hot tub simply disconnect the hot tub element from its terminals, if everything else works and the hot tub has stopped tripping you will need a new element or heater tube depending on the brand and type. (it is recommended to replace a Balboa M7 heater tube with a new tube and not an element due to its complex heating sensors, it is important to have these factory fitted for calibration purposes.

Reasons for tripping hot tub heaters:

Hot tub filled with water incorrectly – if the water is filled through the middle and not through the filter housing to push air out, it will burn out.

Incorrect chemicals – Swimming pool chemicals and highly aciddic water will burn out the seals on a hot tub heater. (swimming pool/ cheap chemicals will also burn out pump seals and anything else made of rubber.)

Incorrectly fitted heater elements – Get a hot tub engineer to replace your filter and not the local sales man.

Blockages – plastic parts and foreign parts will burn out heater elements.

Burn’t Out Circuit Boards or PCB’S

Sometimes if a fault has been happening for a while it will put a strain onto the Circuit Board (PCB) this could mean that a relay has burnt out or stuck. To check for this try the following.

Is any power getting to the heater – test connections at the heating Element.

If yes

Is it pulling any amps – check with a amp clamp around the cable between the PCB and element or the main power cable coming into the hot tub.

If the problem is more complex than above call a hot tub engineer.
