The days when all the pumping that a hot tub needed was done by a single water pump are gone. Modern hot tubs or rather spas typically have two or three, while some might boast of five pumps. What do all these pumps do?
The basic function of the water tub is to keep heated water in the tub. The water pump, when it is operating, keeps the water circulating over a heater so that it is sufficiently warm. Water can get cold when it is being used.
The pump also pushes the water through the filtration system so that debris and harmful stuff in the water is removed. Without the force provided by the pumping, water might not get filtered adequately.
Other functions performed by the pumps in a hot tub include:
- Providing the therapeutic massage of desired force. It is the pumps that expel the water through the jets in the hot tub with sufficient strength to deliver the massaging experience.
- Mixing air and water to provide misted water to provide an enhanced massaging experience. An air blower is a dedicated pump that pumps air through the air pipes, while modern spas might have the functionality to mix air and water in the jets without an air blower.
- Circulating ozone throughout the water where you have an ozone generator installed. Ozone is highly effective in removing harmful organisms from the water and maintaining it in crystal clear condition. Ozone also reduces the costs of standard chlorine / bromine sanitation.
Pumps are mechanical devices with moving parts and are among the first devices in the hot tub to cause problems. The problems usually occur because of:
- Wear and tear of constantly moving parts resulting in some part failing and affecting the efficiency of the pumping function if not stopping it fully.
- The acidity and other properties of the water affecting the ceramic seal separating the dry (motor) and wet (water) ends of the pump, creating cracks that causes water leaks. If the leak is not detected and the seal replaced early enough, water can leak into the motor and repairing the motor can cost far more than the cost of replacing the seal.
You can minimize hot tub servicing costs by keeping the water at the recommended pH levels through regular testing and treatment. Additionally, check the tub for any signs of leak; the earlier you detect a leaking pump, the less will be your hot tub servicing costs.

Hot Tub Components
16 AugustHot Tub Components
The modern hot tub is a complex assembly of various components, very different from a barrel-like wooden hot tub in the garden with a separate wood-fired stove heating the water. Present day hot tubs, more appropriately known as spas, provide a much richer experience than just a warm soak. In fact, the expensive models of today tend to be complete entertainment systems designed to please several senses.
In this article, we look at the major essential components that go into a modern hot tub.
The Shell: The shell holds the water, seating and the bathers. It is typically made of acrylic in attractive colors.
The Understructure: Made of ABS, fiberglass, etc the understructure provides rigidity and strength to the shell. It is also given a coating that has insulating properties.
The Cabinet: The outer covering serves as an attractive exterior and as a cover for the unseemly assembly of pumps, motors, plumbing and other components that serve different functions in the modern hot tub.
Pumps and Motors: The modern hot tub will typically have several hot tub pumps and associated motors. Circulation pumps keep the water flowing through the heater so that users get water of desired warmth throughout their stay in the hot tub. Jet pumps provide the massage experience of desired force. Air blowers and jets provide aerated water that enhances the experience.
Plumbing: Modern spas have a complex plumbing system consisting of pipes, manifolds, unions, joints, suctions, drains and more to keep the water flowing and also mix air with it where needed.
Filtration: Body oils, dead skin, cosmetics and other stuff can quickly make the water in the hot tub quite unpleasant. It is different types of filters that catch much of the debris and maintain the water in tolerable condition.
Control Systems: As would be evident, the modern hot tub is a complicated assembly and electronic controls are typically used to keep things under control. Temperature control is extremely important to avoid danger to users while entertainment systems need to be under the users’ control to ensure that they can get what they want.
The different components of the modern hot tub work together to provide you a great and relaxing experience that the traditional soak in a wooden hot tub could not have provided.

As a user of hot tub, what should you look for? An overview of the key issues can make you a better hot tub buyer and user.
The Hot Tub
The modern hot tub has an outer face that determines it look and feel. If you search around you can find just the color and texture that you prefer. The surface also determines how prone to wear and tear, the environment and the water chemicals your spa is. Expensive models of modern spas might even come with coatings that make them stain-resistant and impart to them anti-bacterial properties.
The under-structure behind the surface provides structural strength. This structure has to support the weight of the large volume of water that a typical spa will be holding, and the weight of the bathers.
The modern hot tub is not just a pool of water kept warm. Instead, it circulates and filters the water to provide a pleasant experience that is also healthy. It is the plumbing and water pump that delivers this essential functionality.
The plumbing and pumping also determine the quality of massage experience that you receive. There are hot tubs with hundreds of water jets and their efficient functioning depends on the plumbing quality.
The whole structure might be covered with a cabinet that matches the setting of the spa.
Energy Efficiency
Keeping hundreds of gallons of water warm requires a lot of energy. Any measures that reduces energy consumption is desirable from the viewpoints of both the environment (energy generation consumes resources and can even pollute the environment) and your personal finances.
Good insulation can keep the warm water from losing its warmth for a longer period thus reducing energy consumption. Foam is used inside the cabinet to provide insulation and manufacturers typically claim better energy efficiency for the insulation solutions they provide. Take a look at this important issue if you are buying a new hot tub, or renovating an existing one.
One thing you can do to reduce energy consumption is to use spa covers that limit heat losses through evaporation. It has been claimed that using covers when the hot tub is not in use can save large amounts of energy.
We will look at health issues related to hot tubs in a separate article.

Hot Tub Repair Helpful Hints 2
1 AprilHot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints 2
In the first article of these hints on hot tub repair, we mentioned that DIY hot tub repair can be messy or even dangerous (if electrical work is involved) for amateurs. However, a general idea about problems and likely causes can help you brief the repair person properly so that the person can come prepared and complete the job quickly.
Hot Tub Works but Water does not get adequately Heated
The problem in this case could be with the power supply, heater, thermostat or one of several others.
- Is the power supply at the required voltage, i.e. 110 volts or 220 volts as appropriate for your hot tub?
- Is the water flowing when the pump is running? It could be that an air lock is preventing water flow, which in turn cuts off power supply to the heater. You can solve the air lock problem by closing the water intake valve to the pump and then loosening the plumbing in front just enough for the air to escape. Tighten the plumbing and open the intake valve before re-energizing the pump.
- If water flow is okay, the problem could be with the heater. Switch to thermostat mode and turn thermostat clockwise to max. Check power at heater terminals. If power is okay and water sill does not heat in reasonable time, the problem is most likely with the heater element.
- It could happen that the pump does not engage with the thermostat, or the power at the heater is not correct (and you don’t really know what to do), it is best you call in a hot tub repair person who can check the contactors and other issues. The problem could be with the thermostat or the controls, best left to professionals to handle.
You should be able to provide meaningful information to the repair person even if you couldn’t solve the problem.

How To Repair A Hot Tub Pump
28 MarchHow To Repair A Hot Tub Pump
Many people enjoy using hot tubs year around, either in their homes or outdoors. When something goes wrong with the parts and functioning, it can be costly to fix. You can save a lot of money by repairing it yourself. By finding out what the specific issue is, it will be easier and quicker to resolve.
If something is wrong with the speed or speed controls, this is usually a sign that there is a problem. If it is stuck on either low or high speed, this is a symptom that there is an issue. Also, of both speeds go at the same time, you should try and resolves the problem so no further damage is done.
If your hot tub is stuck on low speed there are steps you should take to fix it. First, turn the thermostat all the clock wise and make sure to turn the timer off. Next, try switching it over to high speed. If this doesn’t happen you should make sure the high and low speed wires are both connected with the pump. If this fails, you should make sure all connections at the circuit board are okay and in working order.
If you are having the issue of both high and low speeds running at the same time, you can fix this by first disconnecting the pump cord and checking for power on the air switch. If both have power going to them, then there is an internal problem. This mean that the connecting wires have shorted in some way. You may end up having to replace the motor. If you are unable to switch from speed to speed, then the issue is the air switch.
If you are having the issue that it will not go on high speed, this is also either a pump or motor problem. If you try it and nothing happens, rotate the timer and then rotate the thermostat clockwise. After this, if it engages, you should switch the red and black wires. If it is impossible to make it go on high speed, you should replace the motor.
You can also consider checking the voltage. This is found in the back by the motor. If the voltage is fine, then the problem may lie in the pump cord itself. You can check for burnt areas, melted metals, and cord breakage. If you see any of these things, the cord should be replaced immediately. If something is wrong with the voltage at the air switch output, replace the pump output.
If the problem is constant low speed, there are steps to fix that as well. Firstly, turn the timer off and turn the thermostat clockwise. Next, try to switch to the high speed setting. If the high speed does turn on, all you have to do is re-work the wires by swapping out the black and red ones. If nothing changes, you need to replace the contactor.
These are suggestions on how to repair a hot tub pump. You should always be careful when working with electrical wires. If you cannot fix the problem yourself, there are professionals who can assist you.

Hot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints
26 MarchHot Tub Repair: Helpful Hints
While it is best to call in trained hot tub repair professionals to repair and service your hot tub in case of problems, some familiarity with the issues can help you brief the repair person adequately so that the person can come prepared and execute the work quickly. For the simpler issues, you might even be able to do the repair yourself.
DIY repair is not recommended where the issue is not a simple one. Electrical work could be particularly dangerous for amateurs in the presence of water. And unless the water flows are not switched off before removing any components forming part of the plumbing, the place could get more than a little messy,
Subject to the above observations, let us look at hot tub problems and simple repairs.
Hot Tub does not turn on
The typical reason is interruption in power supply to the hot tub, which could occur at several points. You would need a electrical multimeter to check availability of power and its voltage at these points. If you don’t know how to use a multimeter, it’s best you leave the electrical work to a trained person.
- Check incoming power and its voltage, which should be 110V or 220V depending on your equipment.
- If power is present and voltage is correct, check the trip switch. If it is not getting set properly (allowing current to flow) the problem could be with one of the connected components or the switch itself. Disconnect all the components and then reconnect them one by one. If the trip switch gets tripped on connecting a particular component (pump, heater, blower, etc) you might have found the problem.
- If the trip switch is okay, check the fuse. If the fuse is blown, a test like the one described for trip switch could indicate the problem. On the other hand, if the fuse gets blown even when all the components are disconnected, the problem could be with the wiring. In this case, leave the task of troubleshooting to a trained electrician.
- If the above procedures do not solve the problem, it could be related to the contactors or the control in the hot tub. Your best option is to call in your hot tub repair company and explain the problem and what you did.

Hot Tub Plumbing
12 March
Hot tubs work by drawing, heating and circulating water. Naturally, this requires a well designed plumbing system to work efficiently and effectively. Water is drawn from a source, pumped through a water heater and the hot water is then carried to the hot tub through a network of tubes and jets.
Water from any source (particularly from the spa itself) is likely to contain a lot of debris and other undesirable stuff. You need to use filters to remove these before the water is returned to the spa. Filters can be suction type, i.e. connected before the pump’s water intake or pressure type, i.e. pressurized by the pump.
Suction filters can be the weir type that float to the water surface and skim the impurities or skimmer basket type. Pressure filters require a separate skimmer unit.
The water pump forces the water through a heater that heats the water to the set temperature. The heated water flows through larger tubes that end in a network of smaller tubes connected to the jets. Air induction jets mix heated water and air in desired proportions before letting the water into the spa.
The higher qualify air induction jets can eliminate the need for a separate air blower that consumes additional power. Air circulation also requires plumbing of its own, ending in the same air-induction jets that pump the water into the tub
Where an ozonator is used, the ozone jet is place low to maximize water contact. The tube that caries the ozone from the generator to the jet typically loops over the water line so that water cannot back up into the ozonator.
Air blowers also use such a loop and also incorporate a check valve that prevents water from getting into the air lines. Water in air lines can cause water leakage from the hot tub and also electrical short circuit.
Water loses its force around 90 degree bends and so it is a good idea to minimize such bends. Another good idea is to use 2 inch plumbing that can handle almost twice the quantity of water compared to 1.5 inch. The larger pipes also reduces back pressure at the pump.

Facts About Hot Tub Pump
8 MarchFacts About Hot Tub Pump
A hot tub is described as a large or small pool with heated water for relaxing in. The hot tub pump is an essential element on the hot tub. The main pumping system may very well be the single most important functioning part of a hot tub. It is for sure the part that does the most work. It has the responsibility of keeping water flowing throughout the complete system of circulation. The pump pulls the water from the hot tub then sends it on through a filter system.
After the filter system the water is run through a heating system and then returns to go through the jets. A lot of pumps have a strainer basket designed to catch larger pieces of debris such as leaves before the water is sent to the filter system.
The majority of pumping systems are self priming. They are known as centrifugal. A pumping system of this type has a housing. This housing is often times referred to as a vacuum chamber. In order for the pumping system to maintain a vacuum this chamber has to be filled with water.
When a vacuum is created the end result is the booster pulls the water from the hot tub and sends it to the filter. When the pumping system is turned on the vacuum chamber keep full and when the pumping system is turned off it will stay at least halfway full.
When the motor is engaged it will start to turn on high speed. Even if it is a dual speed pumping system it will start the cycle on high speed. The motor turns the impeller that is located in the midsection of the pump towards the opposite end from the power source cord. The pumping system actually seals the impeller tips hydraulically when the motor is running. This all takes place in what is known as a diffuser. Different diffusers are used on these boosters. Some of them are actually part of the pump and some are completely separate.
A circ pump, that is short for circulation pumping is generally not as large as the main pump on the hot tub. The circulation pumps must be tough though. They are responsible for keeping all that water flowing from one place to the next. Twenty four hours a day. The continuous movement through the filter helps keep the water in the hot tub clear instead of green and slimy.
A booster pumping system is used along with the filter system to send water at high pressures. They are never intended to be run if the filtration system is not running. The pump systems for a hot tub often determine the enjoyment gotten from the item. If they are properly maintained they should last for years trouble free.
Learning what the pumping system normally sounds like on the hot tub will save some problems. If the system does not sound normal you should shut it off and either call a repairman or consult the owners manual for instructions.
