Hot Tub Hibernation
18 FebruaryHot Tub Hibernation
If you don’t plan to use your hot tub during the cold winter, you need to take some precautions to ensure that frozen water do not damage your spa parts. Equipment can freeze and crack if too much water is inside. You have to drain the spa of most of its water before sending it into hibernation.
Before you start on the draining process, switch off all power connections. Turn off the heater, and any power switch on the pack. It is a good idea to turn off the circuit-breaker to the hot tub on the electrical panel controlling power supply to your home.
Remove the hot tub cover, and the filter cartridge from its canister.
You are now ready to start the draining process. Attach a garden hose to the bottom spout of the spa. Alternatively, you can siphon off the water from the hot tub. Just make sure that the hose you use is full of water (fill it from a water tap), put one end into the spa and the other end at a level that is significantly lower than the spa bottom.
After the hot tub proper is drained, you need to remove most of the water that remains in the plumbing, including air blower lines. This might require turning the power back on to start the blower and expel the water. It is a good idea to put the cover back on during this process.
Don’t forget to turn the power (and the circuit-breaker) off after this exercise.
You can now remove the cover, and use a sponge to soak up the water in the spa.
You can now cover the equipment panel and use a tarpaulin to cover the whole spa to send your hot tub into winter hibernation. The tough tarp will ensure that your spa is safe from the elements.
Hot Tub Water Jet Problems and Solutions
6 JuneHot Tub Water Jet Problems and Solutions
The water jets in a hot tub provide the real experience that you seek from the spa. When they cease to function as expected, your experience also deteriorates. An idea about the common problems and what to do in each case can definitely improve the experience.
Calcium Buildup: The calcium in hard water used in the tub can build up in the jets and cause mobile jets to become immobile. Test the water for hardness and add water softener chemicals as necessary.
Air in Water Pump: If air gets into the water pump when you drain the hot tub or otherwise, it can affect the pump’s ability to move water forcefully enough. At the jets, you will find that the water is not providing a sufficiently strong massage experience. The problem is solved by removing the air from the pump. Loosen the coupling (a little) at the discharge end of the pump. When the pump is switched on, air inside will escape through the opening. When water begins to spray through the opening, quickly tighten the coupling.
Irregular Flow of Water: Instead of providing a smooth flow, water might come out of the jets in spurts. This problem can result from several causes that need to be eliminated one by one to arrive at the real problem.
- Check the level of water in the tub. If it is too low, air might be getting mixed with water and affecting the flow of the latter. Topping up the hot tub should solve the problem if this is the case
- If water level is not the problem, filters could be. They might have become clogged and need cleaning or even replacement. To check, remove the filters and run the jets. If the water flow is normal now, the problem is filters. Clean or replace them as warranted. If the filter is beyond cleaning, putting them back can cause damage to the pump.
- If the problem is not with the filter, the culprit could be a blockage in the plumbing. Check around the pump for the existence of any such blockage and remove if any are found.
- If none of the above steps stops the problem, it could be with the pump or control system. Repairing these is best left to trained persons.

Hot Tub Water Maintenance
1 JuneHot Tub Water Maintenance
The warm water in your hot tub and the sprays and bubbles they generate provide the wonderfully pleasing experience that you get. However, a lot of work goes into sustaining this great experience. You have to keep the water circulating as otherwise the stagnant water can turn out to be the breeding ground for all kinds of harmful organisms.
Keeping the water circulating is not the only task you need to do. Even well-circulated water can carry debris around and you need to filter the water during each round. And filters can get clogged and that means you have to clean the filters periodically to maintain their functionality.
Even filters cannot kill off all the harmful organisms. You need chemicals like Chlorine or Bromine to do that. These chemicals are available in tablet and granule forms for easy and measured application.
The hot tub water can get cloudy with stuff like dead skin and other micro-sized materials that the filter might not be able to catch. Oxidizing chemicals can oxidize such stuff and keep the water clear. Use shock oxidizers to do this task.
The water can become too acidic or too alkaline in the course of regular use and chemical treatments. Acidic water irritates the skin and can also corrode the tub and its components. Alkaline water causes stains and deposits on the tub.
The right balance between acidity and alkalinity (pH balance) is maintained using additives that that increase or decrease it. Whether an increase or decrease is needed is determined by using test strips that tell you visually what to do. The recommended pH balance is in the range of 7.2 and 7.8.
We mentioned earlier about the cloudiness of water. Such cloudiness can be caused by calcium deposits from “hard” water. In some regions, water tends to be hard and in these places, you need chemicals to control the calcium levels in your water.
The water can also contain other metals and minerals and these can lead to such side effects as stains and increased requirement of the other chemicals mentioned above. By using special chemicals that reduce the levels of such metals and minerals, you will save on these standard chemicals.
Once you have become familiar with the routines outlined above, maintaining your hot tub water in great condition will become an automated task requiring little effort. Till then, however, you will have to take some pains to learn what needs to be done and do it correctly.

Hot Tub Filters are Critical for Your Health
19 MayHot Tub Filters are Critical for Your Health
Ever wondered about the lowly filters that are constantly filtering out all kinds of debris from the water that is reaching your hot tub? Just think of the variety of debris it is keeping out and you will begin to appreciate the filter’s value.
If your hot tub is inside the house, the debris will typically include dead skin, hair, oils, cosmetic chemicals and other dissolved solids. If the hot tubs or water sources are out in the open, the debris will also likely include leaves, algae and other similar stuff.
Let us look at the different types of filters and how they function.
Cartridge Filters are the type most frequently used. These filter containers contain tightly packed pleats of mesh material such as Dacron. The tight pleats offer a large surface area to capture debris before allowing the water in.
Sand Filters contain sand and gravel that filter out the dirt and debris from the water flowing through them. Because the comparatively bulky filter material fails to trap microscopic debris, chemicals that coagulate microscopic particles are often used to aggregate the particles into bulkier stuff that sand can capture. The filters also require a specific kind of sand, which needs to be replaced periodically.
Diatomaceous Earth Filters contain grids of very fine mesh that is coated with diatomaceous earth (DE) that consists of petrified bones crushed into fine powder. DE acts like a sponge that traps the microscopic debris functioning very much like an adhesive. Disposal of used DE could be a problem, however.
A few simple steps can help maintain hot tub filters in good shape.
- Clean the filter regularly using high pressure water nozzles; do not use cleaning chemicals except those specifically made for hot tub filters
- Replace the filter when it gets worn out or when it ceases to get any cleaner when cleaned as above
- Preferably run the hot tub daily an hour or so even if no one is using it; this ensures that there is adequate water circulation; it also ensures that the hot tub water is turned over regularly
- Keep a watch on the water chemistry and keep it at recommended levels; filters are designed for debris and cannot kill off all bacteria
- It will be a good idea to take a shower to clean yourself before getting into the hot tub; that can reduce the strain on the filters
- Remember that hot tubs are more like spas and not like your bath tub; minimize oils and soaps in the hot tub

A Brief Look At How To Clean A Hot Tub Cover
15 April
A Brief Look At How To Clean A Hot Tub Cover
Regarding how to clean a hot tub cover, it is a very easy process. The general gist of it, as with anything, is maintenance. The actual washing of it, using soap, only has to be done once or twice a month; however, the upkeep of it is even more essential.
To follow are directions for cleaning the top of a jacuzzi. One only needs to take a fresh towel, wipe and wipe the cover, wiping off the moisture that has built up over the course of the day and use of the hot tub. This should be done as often as possible.
Starting out with a towel or cloth, one should wipe off the jacuzzi cover using a mild soap, or chlorine, solution. It’s a good idea to not use detergent for this task, as it is too abrasive. Secondly, keep in mind that the unit’s chemistry is very important in its maintenance; it has to be kept at the proper chemistry. If not, chemicals build up on the lid, chemicals which are corrosive and will corrode the lid and damage it in the process
Wiping off any chemical moisture as it appears is good upkeep of the tub. It will prevent any chemical buildup; just as one is supposed to brush one’s teeth several times a day the same principal applies here. It’s preventative.
Plaque and tartar can build up on the teeth and chemical residue will collect on the lid, especially when it’s closed, and that is when the chemical residue will begin to eat at the tub’s lid. Wiping it daily will avoid the accumulation of corrosive chemical build up, and is so important in maintaining the life of the tub’s lid and of the hot tub itself.
One thing to bear in mind regarding a hot tub lid is that the corrosive chemicals which result from every day use will eat at the tub cover until it becomes porous. That is a good thing to prevent because if and when that happens, moisture is going to seep into the EPS core. So, daily upkeep is just as important as cleaning with soap, once or twice monthly.
The next step is to wash inside the unit’s zipper area. That is a very important step in the prevention of mildew growth. Mildew aggravates allergies, so it is wise for an allergy-sufferer to perform this step. Doing so several times a year will be adequate.
Those are instructions on cleaning a hot tub cover. In today’s hustle and bustle and post-recession economy, it is essential to maintain one’s possessions, because it’s so necessary to save money. Keeping the tub cover clean is tremendously important in extending the life of a jacuzzi and thus, delaying having to buy a new one. In addition, the water in the jacuzzi will stay cleaner which is a health benefit. Thus, it becomes not just a savings on the hot tub, but in allergy medication and treatment costs, as well. Then, one can enjoy a hot soak for years to come. The health benefits of a hot tub are many, such that even chiropractic and other medical expenses are no longer necessary.

Hot Tub Plumbing
12 March
Hot tubs work by drawing, heating and circulating water. Naturally, this requires a well designed plumbing system to work efficiently and effectively. Water is drawn from a source, pumped through a water heater and the hot water is then carried to the hot tub through a network of tubes and jets.
Water from any source (particularly from the spa itself) is likely to contain a lot of debris and other undesirable stuff. You need to use filters to remove these before the water is returned to the spa. Filters can be suction type, i.e. connected before the pump’s water intake or pressure type, i.e. pressurized by the pump.
Suction filters can be the weir type that float to the water surface and skim the impurities or skimmer basket type. Pressure filters require a separate skimmer unit.
The water pump forces the water through a heater that heats the water to the set temperature. The heated water flows through larger tubes that end in a network of smaller tubes connected to the jets. Air induction jets mix heated water and air in desired proportions before letting the water into the spa.
The higher qualify air induction jets can eliminate the need for a separate air blower that consumes additional power. Air circulation also requires plumbing of its own, ending in the same air-induction jets that pump the water into the tub
Where an ozonator is used, the ozone jet is place low to maximize water contact. The tube that caries the ozone from the generator to the jet typically loops over the water line so that water cannot back up into the ozonator.
Air blowers also use such a loop and also incorporate a check valve that prevents water from getting into the air lines. Water in air lines can cause water leakage from the hot tub and also electrical short circuit.
Water loses its force around 90 degree bends and so it is a good idea to minimize such bends. Another good idea is to use 2 inch plumbing that can handle almost twice the quantity of water compared to 1.5 inch. The larger pipes also reduces back pressure at the pump.

A Simple Guide To Hot Tub Service
9 MarchA Simple Guide To Hot Tub Service
Hot tub service can be very important in the life of a hot tub. How the owner handles every day maintenance and care will directly affect the life span of the hot tub and the mechanical parts within. The home owners manual that came with the hot tub should instruct the owner on generalized care and maintenance of the equipment, however, if the owners manual is not available this article may help to solve some of the dilemma of spa service. A hot tub is designed to help a person relax and remove stress from their body.
The soothing hot water can aide in minor pains caused from sore over worked muscles. The down side is this; if a hot tub is not properly cared for and maintained it can make you sick. When the ph level in a hot tub or spa gets out of balance bacteria start to grow quickly. Unfortunately some diseases can even be spread by the lack sanitizing chemicals in the water. Every hot tub owner should know how to maintain and service their equipment.
Make certain the chemicals in the hot tub are at the suggested level. Check manufacturers suggestions from either the hot tub or the makers of the chlorine or the bromine that is being used.
Algae are the green slime line or floating green or black particles seen in the tub. A simple algaecide from the spa supply store will correct this problem. Cloudy water can be easily treated with either a clarifier designed for spas or a shock treatment designed for spas.
Stains can be a problem to remove but one trick is to apply Polident (the one for dentures) to the dry tub and rub until the stain is gone. Scaling is that gray or white it can even be brown at times, waterline mark. Vinegar is a great solution for scaling but vinegar will throw the ph off. Try putting the vinegar on a sponge and hold a towel under to catch the run off from the sponge.
If you are dealing with an outdoor spa service or hot tub services and maintenance, consider changing the water fairly regularly. This action should be taken at least once every four weeks. Every week the pump filters need to be removed and rinsed with the garden hose. Once a week should do the trick but more often will not hurt. Debris such as sticks and bugs and leaves can get stuck in the filter.
About once every twelve months have a professional come out and ensure that the jets and motors are all working properly. While the technician is there they will oil or lube anything that requires it. This action can save you from having expensive repairs to do from equipment failure.
Hot tubs are a financial investment that with a little care can bring you many years of enjoyment.Remember, for proper hot tub service keep the water ph levels correctly balanced, clean out all debris regularly, drain often and every twelve months have a preventive check up.

Protective Hot Tub Covers Need Protection Themselves
26 FebruaryProtective Hot Tub Covers Need Protection Themselves
Hot tub covers protect the water in the hot tub in two ways. They protect the hot water from the cold weather, minimizing heat loss. They also protect the water from the dirt and debris that are floating in the air outside.
In discharging this function, the hot tub cover itself can suffer damage. The steam and chemicals in the hot water can erode the seam and linings of the cover. Exposed to the steam day after day, the cover can get water-logged, making it not only less efficient but also not a pretty sight.
Even a healthy hot tub cover does not fully prevent the water from losing its heat. Some heat is always being lost. Just look at the cover on a snowy day; you will notice that while the deck is snow-covered the cover is usually not.
With energy costs always on an upward move, it makes sense to do every thing to keep the spa water hot for as long as possible by minimizing heat loss. Using a thermal blanket between the water and cover is an important step in this direction. The air sacks in the thermal blanket not only help it float on the water but also act as insulators.
By cutting the thermal sheet to fit the size and shape of the water surface, it can be made to act as an effective shield between the water and hot tub cover, thus prolonging the life of the cover. Additionally, energy costs are reduced because the spa water retains it heat much longer. While the outer cover keeps the cold out the inner blanket keeps the heat in.
Longer cover life and lower energy costs together can cut your hot tub maintenance costs significantly over time. The higher outlay on a good quality cover and a thermal blanket will pay for itself in very little time.
Hot tub Repair Man is commited to the highest quality parts and services available, we choose to sell Proline Hot Tub Covers and Thermal Covers through our online store.
Hot Tub Problems – Excessive Foam
16 FebruaryHot Tub Problems: Excessive Foam
While bubbly spa water is normal excessive foaming is not. If excessive foaming is allowed to continue the spa water becomes bad. Bad spa water will require more frequent adjustments and the filters are also likely to get more easily damaged. In addition to higher costs as above, the experience provided by the hot tub also becomes less than pleasing.
Several factors can lead to excessive foaming in hot tubs. Residues of foaming products such as shampoo and deodorants used by bathers can cause it. Bathers should consider showering before using the spa or at least not using hair and skin care products before entering the hot tub.
The detergent residues in your bathing suits also can lead to excessive foaming. However well the suits are rinsed, some residues will remain if detergents are used during washing. The solution is to wash these suits without using detergents. Wash them more often to compensate.
If you drink liquids while in the spa, it is possible that some of these are spilt into the spa water. Some of the liquids have a foaming effect. Take particular care not to spill what you drink.
Yet another cause can be the very chemicals that you use to keep the water healthy. While quality chemicals used strictly as per directions might not cause such foaming, fillers in cheap chemicals, as also excessive use of even good quality chemicals, can. So use only good quality chemicals and use them as per directions on the package.
Accumulated solids dissolved in the hot tub water also contribute to excessive foaming. These solids come from different sources – such as the chemicals you use to maintain water quality, the cosmetic products you use and even the skin flakes peeling from your body. The solution to this problem is to replace the water in the hot tub once in three months.
