A Brief Look At How To Clean A Hot Tub Cover

Hot Tub CoversA Brief Look At How To Clean A Hot Tub Cover

Regarding how to clean a hot tub cover, it is a very easy process. The general gist of it, as with anything, is maintenance. The actual washing of it, using soap, only has to be done once or twice a month; however, the upkeep of it is even more essential.

To follow are directions for cleaning the top of a jacuzzi. One only needs to take a fresh towel, wipe and wipe the cover, wiping off the moisture that has built up over the course of the day and use of the hot tub. This should be done as often as possible.

Starting out with a towel or cloth, one should wipe off the jacuzzi cover using a mild soap, or chlorine, solution. It’s a good idea to not use detergent for this task, as it is too abrasive. Secondly, keep in mind that the unit’s chemistry is very important in its maintenance; it has to be kept at the proper chemistry. If not, chemicals build up on the lid, chemicals which are corrosive and will corrode the lid and damage it in the process

Wiping off any chemical moisture as it appears is good upkeep of the tub. It will prevent any chemical buildup; just as one is supposed to brush one’s teeth several times a day the same principal applies here. It’s preventative.

Plaque and tartar can build up on the teeth and chemical residue will collect on the lid, especially when it’s closed, and that is when the chemical residue will begin to eat at the tub’s lid. Wiping it daily will avoid the accumulation of corrosive chemical build up, and is so important in maintaining the life of the tub’s lid and of the hot tub itself.

One thing to bear in mind regarding a hot tub lid is that the corrosive chemicals which result from every day use will eat at the tub cover until it becomes porous. That is a good thing to prevent because if and when that happens, moisture is going to seep into the EPS core. So, daily upkeep is just as important as cleaning with soap, once or twice monthly.

The next step is to wash inside the unit’s zipper area. That is a very important step in the prevention of mildew growth. Mildew aggravates allergies, so it is wise for an allergy-sufferer to perform this step. Doing so several times a year will be adequate.

Those are instructions on cleaning a hot tub cover. In today’s hustle and bustle and post-recession economy, it is essential to maintain one’s possessions, because it’s so necessary to save money. Keeping the tub cover clean is tremendously important in extending the life of a jacuzzi and thus, delaying having to buy a new one. In addition, the water in the jacuzzi will stay cleaner which is a health benefit. Thus, it becomes not just a savings on the hot tub, but in allergy medication and treatment costs, as well. Then, one can enjoy a hot soak for years to come. The health benefits of a hot tub are many, such that even chiropractic and other medical expenses are no longer necessary.

Protective Hot Tub Covers Need Protection Themselves

Spa CoverHot tub covers protect the water in the hot tub in two ways. They protect the hot water from the cold weather, minimizing heat loss. They also protect the water from the dirt and debris that are floating in the air outside.

In discharging this function, the hot tub cover itself can suffer damage. The steam and chemicals in the hot water can erode the seam and linings of the cover. Exposed to the steam day after day, the cover can get water-logged, making it not only less efficient but also not a pretty sight.

Even a healthy hot tub cover does not fully prevent the water from losing its heat. Some heat is always being lost. Just look at the cover on a snowy day; you will notice that while the deck is snow-covered the cover is usually not.

Thermal BlanketWith energy costs always on an upward move, it makes sense to do every thing to keep the spa water hot for as long as possible by minimizing heat loss. Using a thermal blanket between the water and cover is an important step in this direction. The air sacks in the thermal blanket not only help it float on the water but also act as insulators.

By cutting the thermal sheet to fit the size and shape of the water surface, it can be made to act as an effective shield between the water and hot tub cover, thus prolonging the life of the cover. Additionally, energy costs are reduced because the spa water retains it heat much longer. While the outer cover keeps the cold out the inner blanket keeps the heat in.

Longer cover life and lower energy costs together can cut your hot tub maintenance costs significantly over time. The higher outlay on a good quality cover and a thermal blanket will pay for itself in very little time.

Hot Tub Covers

Proline Hot Tub Covers

American hot tub covers, delivered through a UK & European Network of Dealers in Four (4) weeks. Quality and service previously unseen in the UK hot tub cover industry.

Proline Covers are the only cover available in the UK designed and manufactured using CAD/CAM technology – where computer designed covers are manufactured using computer controlled machines – ensuring absolute accuracy.

Compare this to typical UK-made covers that are marked out by hand using steel rulers and marker pens from hand-made drawings, then cut by hand making an ‘estimated’ allowance for stitching – a bit ‘hit-and-miss’ by any standards!

Proline Covers are American hot tub covers made to our exacting standards using the very best materials that are only available in USA. No manufacturer in the UK has access to these extremely high quality materials that were originally developed for the marine and sail making industry in USA, and then evolved further for use in the American hot tub cover industry. Marine grade vinyl and marine grade thread from USA is a quantum leap beyond that currently available in the UK, where false claims that cheap furniture vinyl is ‘marine grade’ are not unknown.

Proline covers are manufactured using high quality virgin polystyrene foam and offer the highest level of heat retention for any cover anywhere in the World. We use high-tech computer controlled machines to cut the insulating foam cores using CAD designs. The cut edges are sealed by the action of cutting, producing a very accurate finish that is resistant to water ingress. Compare that to the low quality re-formed foam used by UK manufacturers; marked out using a steel tape and marker pen, then cut using a hand held DIY jig saw as close to the line as the operator can get, leaving an uneven and open jagged cut that is prone to water ingress.

First in the UK – Proline Covers feature an optional Reflex Energy Shield for the cover underside. This woven silver metallic material is tough and highly resistant to heat, steam and chemicals – it ‘bounces’ back the heat into the spa, saving energy costs.

Proline covers are NOT to be confused with any other UK made spa cover – we only use exceptionally high grade materials to custom make you spa cover in ANY dimensions – up to 96 inches, and beyond! AND delivered in 4 weeks.

Proline Covers brings you the very best Hot Tub Covers available anywhere. These spa covers are of the very highest quality with energy effiicency built-in that will save you money. Our manufacturing and safety standards are second to none in the industry. Peace of mind with a warranty like no other. You’ll discover why our Hot Tub covers are way ahead of the competition.

Feature Description
Marine Grade Vinyl Our polyester re-inforced backing does not soak up water and is highly resistant to mildew and rot. Some cover manufacturers use cheap furniture vinyl with an absorbent cotton backing, and pass it off as ‘Marine-Grade’. Proline Covers are manufactured from heavy weight (30oz) true marine grade vinyl, treated with UV protection and mildew inhibitors.
Vapour Barrier Steam barrier protection with sealed polyethylene wrap. Keeps water vapour away from the insulating cores of the cover. Double wrap option is also available for extra protection.
2 Year Warranty Proline Covers ‘no hassle’ 2 Year Warranty is provided as standard on all our covers. Other UK suppliers of hot tub covers have far higher ‘problem’ and ‘fault’ rates because their covers are hand-drawn, measured and marked out by hand with marker pens, then cut by hand, introducing high margins of error. Proline Covers are designed on computers, then the vinyl and foam is cut using computer controlled machinery from the same computer design files, ensuring absolute accuracy, finish and fit.

Proline Covers Warranty is simple and straightforward :

  • If its our fault – we fix it at our expense
  • If it’s your fault – we fix it at your expense
Fast Problem Resolution Should you ever encounter any issues with your cover and need either a replacement vinyl outer or inner insulating cores, Proline Covers guarantee to provide the replacement inside one week.

Your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Underside Material The underside material of the cover that faces the water takes the most abuse. It’s also the first line of defence in preventing chemical damage and moisture infiltration, and must be durable enough to withstand the constant dragging from removing the cover from the spa. Proline Covers are manufactured using a double laminated reinforced, chemical and ozone resistant 12oz scrim. This material is so strong (it’s constructed similarly to rip-stop- nylon) that it’s used internally throughout the cover to reinforce the double stitching. This heavy duty and rugged protective underside is tailored in the same way as the rest of the vinyl cover; making for a well-fitting tailored finish and fit.

Compare this with the stretchy and weak mesh ‘net’ that is frequently found under spa covers made in the UK. Such materials offer little protection against chemical fumes and vapours reaching the foam insulating cores. The net mesh is also very ‘stretchy’, and this means that the vinyl cover skin always looks wrinkly and baggy – like the cover doesn’t fit properly. All such covers can only be given a one year warranty, because the materials used will always allow moisture to get into the foam inserts.

Energy Shield Underside Proline Covers are the first to bring energy efficient reflective Energy Shield underside material to the UK hot tub cover market. This scrim material replaces the standard underside with a 12oz woven highly reflective metallic material. One of the ways that heat is lost is that it radiates out in waves. The Energy Shield underside bounces those heat waves back into the spa water, thereby increasing the covers insulating effectiveness and efficiency.
Insulating Cores Most other hot tub covers offer just one choice of insulating foam cores. But one solution does not suit all applications. Proline Covers offer FOUR grades of cover so you can choose to invest in additional insulation and save money in running costs because you have a more efficient cover.

Proline Cover Insulating Core Options

  • Premium Cover with No. 10 Foam, 4 inch to 2 inch taper
  • Premium Plus Cover with No. 15 Foam, 4 inch to 2 inch taper
  • Deluxe Cover with No. 20 Foam, 5 inch to 3 inch taper
  • Ultimate Cover with No. 25 Foam, 6 inch to 4 inch taper

The foam cores in Proline Covers are made from virgin materials, not re-formed or recycled which frequently contain impurities and are of a lesser density than virgin foam.

Hinge With the current trend of cover lifting devices (which we highly believe in) the hinge is one of the most well-used parts of a cover. The hinge in Proline Covers is constructed of the same high quality vinyl as the rest of the outer cover. It is not simply two halves of the cover sewn together, but is a one piece hinge, four layers thick, double stitched into each half of the cover.
Tie-Down Straps Each cover comes standard with four tie-down straps equipped with locking child resistant safety latches. To assure the integrity and prevent the straps from ripping out (perhaps from high winds), the straps are sewn into the cover in four places, including the skirt. This makes them virtually tear-proof. Besides aiding in keeping out unwanted visitors, the tie-downs, when properly used help to prevent strong winds from blowing off the cover. There is also the option of additional tie-downs. The “locking latches” are moulded after the quick release buckles found on sports equipment and have been specifically designed for spas! Each NMF Fastener may be locked down individually. They are quickly installed with three stainless steel screws (provided).
Handles Unlike the handles on many covers which tend to be a great weak point, Proline Covers handles have been designed and engineered to be one of the strongest! Handles are great when the cover is new, but over a long period of time most covers eventually get a bit heavier. Cover handles, having such a small attachment area can be easily torn off, sometimes tearing the cover. Our cover’s handles are made of extremely strong, 1-1/2″ wide nylon webbing, then covered in the same vinyl as the rest of the cover. Fully integrated into the spa cover, additional stitching and internal reinforcing makes them some of the strongest available.
Skirt The skirt of a cover is another of the many important parts. It needs to properly protect the lip of your spa from the damaging rays of the sun, and be strong enough to use for lifting your cover. Proline Covers skirts are double stitched into the cover for strength, and gusseted to provide the best protection!

One piece continuous skirts, which are easier to manufacture, have many inherent problems when compared to skirts that are gusseted (also called “slitted”). Gusseted skirts will hang much straighter and have less tendency to bunch-up under the cover, preventing a proper seal between the cover and the spa. The skirts are double sewn into the cover for extra strength and strong enough to lift even the heaviest of covers.

Zips The zippers are one of the lesser important parts of a cover. However if anyone ever steps on your cover causing the foam to bow you’ll want to remove and turn over the inner foam core. For this reason we only use non-corrosive zippers. Besides having the largest teeth available (prevents debris from causing them to stick), they’re rust and chemical corrosion proof. And of course they’re quadruple stitched for added strength.
Thread With the entire cover being stitched together, the thread is also an important aspect to consider (some cover manufacturers heat seal thier vinyl together, but the seams tend to become very brittle in the hot sun and freezing cold). The thread used in our covers is a No.93, UV resistant, bonded, Dacron Polyester thread. The polyester part is what is important, unlike cotton thread it won’t rot in a short period of time, and the UV resistance prevents any degradation from the sun. “Bonded” means that it’s actually water tight and can’t absorb mildew causing moisture. The No.93 is the weight of the thread and the entire cover is double stitched (except for the hinge which is quadruple stitched).

FAQs:

Insulating Foam

Proline Covers provide a choice of insulating foam density. But what does it mean and why should you care? Well the answer is quite simply that you get to choose the level of insulation you need balanced against the price you want to pay. Higher density foam has greater insulating properties and greater strength.

Cheaper covers will almost always be low-density foam and if you don’t see the foam density stated, you can almost guarantee that it is cheap and inferior foam. But it doesn’t simply stop there – Proline Covers are made using moisture resistant, fire retardant, virgin foam containing no impurities; in other words it is not formed, reground or scraps (features of inferior quality covers). Our foam has twice the water run off rate of our competitors, giving Proline Covers longer life.

R Value

This value represents the insulating abilities of the cover. The higher the number the better it will hold in heat.

Looking After Your Hot Tub Cover Hot Tub and Spa Cover Maintenance and Use Instructions

As an owner of a Proline Cover, you have purchased a high quality product; handle it with care and it will last many years. Your cover will get damaged if you handle it roughly, drag it or lean it against sharp objects. The foam cores will bend or snap if you put anything heavy on the cover, or if you lean or stand on it (keep people and animals off).

These simple instructions are provided to help you look after your cover so that it lasts you for many years.

COVER CARE

  • Don’t lift the cover without unfastening all locking straps.
  • Handles are for opening and closing the cover, not for removing it from the spa or carrying the cover.
  • Keep the cover clean. Wash with mild soap and rinse with clean water. Clean both top and underside of the cover.
  • Apply a vinyl conditioner twice a year. Contact your dealer for details and advice.
  • We recommend that you use a cover lifter. It makes opening and closing the cover very easy and it extends the life of your cover. Ask your dealer for information.

Cautionary Notice

CAUTION: AVOID DROWNING RISK

Failure to follow all instructions may result in injury or drowning

  1. Stay off cover. Do not walk, sit, lean or lie or permit any heavy weight to rest on cover.
  2. NEVER leave an uncovered Hot Tub or spa unattended. NEVER leave a covered Hot Tub or spa unlocked. Keep children away – objects or children cannot be seen under the cover.
  3. ALWAYS remove cover completely before bathers enter – entrapment risk.
  4. Remove standing water – a child can drown on top of cover.
  5. Check cover regularly for premature deterioration or damage.

Frozen Hot Tubs

by

Frozen Hot TubDon’t switch your hot tub of this year because its going to be  a cold winter, a little preparation can save alot of money and an expensive repair bill, already this year we have repaired many frozen hot tubs, the pipes had cracked or broken and the hot tubs could not hold water.

The following are a few pointers to help you prepare for a long cold winter.

If possible leave the hot tub switched on, maintain the chemicals in a normal fashion, check the filter because this will still need cleaning, but reduce the temperature to around 20C (if possible) to save on electricity.

What to do if you have a problem

Stopping a hot tub from freezing if a pump breaks isnt easy because…

If you have gate valves to a leaking or tripping pump, close them and unplug the pump and call / book in an hot tub engineer.

If you cant isolate the pump unplug it and call an hot tub engineer.

If you have a leak, can the water level be maintained untill an hot tub engineer can repair repair it.

Call an experienced hot tub repair company, not a have ago hero! a good company will have all the parts on their van already and repair the problem on the day, this could save any further freezing problems.

What to do if your hot tub Freezes.

If the hot tub is frozen can it be defrosted easily?

Is the hot tub in a shed or conservatory can the room be heated?

Does the circulation pump work? if so disconnect all the other pumps and air blower, and let the circulation pump and heater slowly reheat the hot tub. (the reason for disconnecting the main pumps and air blower is is because if half the pipes of a pump are frozen the remaining pipes will have twice the pressure and blow apart or split.)

Split or broken pipe work

If the hot tub is already leaking from broken pipes, call a hot tub engineer to repair A.S.A.P. this should save other pipes and the wet ends of the pumps from cracking.

Tripping Electrics

If the electrics on the hot tub are tripping, disconnect each plugged in part until it stops, ( A single pump filtering is enough to stop the hot tub from freezing).

Fully Foamed Hot Tubs

Important – A fully foamed hot tub can still freeze and makes for a more expensive repair.

Some American brands are fully foamed apart from the compartment area, this makes for very expensive repairs on water leaks especially when the side panels are not designed to come of.

Do not leave the panels of the compartment area, the hot tub pipes will freeze quicker.

Extra Insulation

If the hot tub is working fine and you have a good cover, you don’t need any extra insulation, this would restrict the flow of air and cause damp patches and rot inside your wooden framed hot tub.

New hot tub Cover

The time to buy a new hot tub cover is just before winter, the reason for this is it will hold more heat, stop steam and evaporation and save alot of money.

If you have a new cover you may need to reinforce it if the snow gets deep and heavy.

How to reinforce a hot tub cover

Lay planks of wood across the length of the cover, overlapping the ends slightly.

Put a sheet of plywood on top of this.

Filling with hot water

Do not fill a hot tub with hot water, this will instantly crack your plumbing, instead half fill and then top up with hot water, diluting the water in the middle of the hot tub.

Always fill the first half of the hot tub by putting the hose down the filter tube, this will remove air locks and stop the heater from burning out.

If topping up with hot water fill from the middle and slowly increase the water temperature.

Winterising – using antifreeze

So far antifreeze in a hot tub is not proven to work, it is very difficult to get the little bit of water the sit inside the plumbing of a hot tub.

Keep the hot tub switched on at a low temperature and control the chemicals.
